Seasoned firewood for sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The warmth from a hearth depends on what you burn in it. To get the most from your firewood, make sure it is perfectly seasoned. Why? Seasoned firewood not only gives off less smoke, but it also burns more efficiently and reduces your consumption of wood. When wood is unseasoned, it produces creosote, and increases the chances of chimney fires. Green, damp firewood will never get a warm, crackling fire going. So for safety’s sake, convenience and comfort, and for economical as well as environmental reasons, it pays to use seasoned firewood.
How is firewood seasoned? “Seasoned" firewood has been cut and split. It is then dried long enough, for about two years to remove the moisture from it. At CR Tree Care we cut, split and season the firewood with great care.
Stock up your log store with our highest grade seasoned firewood. It’s perfectly seasoned and ready for burning.
We can arrange to deliver clean, seasoned firewood right at your doorstep. Since firewood needs to be stored properly to keep it dry and in optimal condition for burning, we will even stack the wood where you want it, FREE.
Should you prefer to pick it up, we'll set it up in your truck for you.
How to recognize seasoned firewood
Color—It’s a duller shade compared to the bright green wood and has darkened ends that have visible cracks or splits
Weight —Compared to green wood of the same species, seasoned wood is lighter
Bark—The bark of seasoned wood falls off easier that it does with green wood
Sound—Knock two pieces of firewood together. If you hear a higher pitched “clunk,” you have seasoned wood in your hands. If it sounds duller, more like a “thud,” the wood is still green
Some trees build better fires than others
Heavier woods have a higher density and therefore have higher calorific values. Oak, Ash, Sycamore, Elm, Beech, and Walnut trees are excellent classes of firewood and fires made from these trees burn longer. We recommend a mix of Ash, Oak, Birch and Maple. While Birch wood and Maple wood light up faster, Oak and Ash keep your fire burning longer.
